01. When can I apply?

Applications for the Loan Scholarship will be open every year from December/January onwards.

02. What is the eligibility for the Loan Scholarships?

To be eligible for the Loan Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Be an Indian national
  • Be below 45 years of age
  • Have a graduate degree from a recognised Indian university and have secured at least 60% of their last academic examination
  • Could be in the final year of graduation or awaiting results
  • Have secured admission or awaiting admission to pursue Master’s / PhD / Postdoctoral / Research fellowships studies abroad.

03. Can I apply even if I do not have confirmed admission?

Yes, you may apply even if you do not have confirmed admission from the universities you have applied to.

04. What is the loan scholarship?

The scholarship is offered at a simple interest of 2% per annum. However, if students repaid the loan within the specified time period (between 3rdand 7thyear), the Trustees may waive the interest.

05. What is the maximum loan amount you offer?

The amount awarded as the loan scholarship ranges between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

06. Is there any gift awards also?

Yes, the selected scholars may also be recommended for a gift scholarship and partial travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs.7,50,000/- and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs.50,000/-.

07. Do you ask for any collateral security?

We do not insist on any collateral but applicants must have a guarantor. This is mandatory.

08. Where can one obtain the application form?

The application forms are available online on our web site.

09. Can the application be filled in online?

Yes, Candidates have to create a login ID and password to be able to apply. Please note that you may create only one Login ID using your email ID. You may directly complete the application form online in one or more visits but must remember to save the draft before exiting each time. There is a preview option before final submission after which candidates will not be able to make any changes.

10. Do you have any format for the Statement of Purpose (SoP)?

There is no specific format. However, we have provided some guidance on our web site on how you can construct a good SOP. Please note that the SOP carries a lot of weight. The SOP should be specifically addressed to the J N Tata Endowment’s Loan Scholarship and not be the same as that sent to the universities from where candidates are seeking admission

11. Do you need a letter of recommendation (LoR) and is there any specific format?

Yes, candidates are required to mention the recommender’s details in the specific column provided for it in the application form. The LOR should be mailed from recommender’s official email I.D. and not from personal email I.D.Recommender may be a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the applicant is / was working. The LOR should be specifically addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment”, should be mailed to jnte@tatatrusts.org in the following format:-

  1. Subject line should be the candidate’s full name with his registered email-id.
  2. The recommendation should be in the body of the email itself and not as an attachment and contain the following details :
    • Candidate’s academic achievements and potential, projects if any undertaken under recommender’s supervision or otherwise, personality and motivation, professional achievements (for experienced candidates) and contribution to community.
    • Recommender’s name, designation, and department, name of college/university/organisation, city, and contact numbers.

12. Are any documents required while submitting the application form?

All scanned copies of the required documents are must be submitted before the time of the interview.

13. Can I update my application form at the later stage?

Yes, you can update the status by using the same portal with the same registered email id.

14. How and when will I get the status of my application form?

Candidates who are selected for the next level are intimated over email between March and June. All the Awards will be announced together by the first week of July

15. When are the interviews held?

The interviews are held between April and June.

16. Are the candidates reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews?

There will be no reimbursement of any expenses for the interviews. Candidates have an option to take the interview through Skype by providing their skype ID.
