The experience of the pandemic and all that it has entailed has made many realise the importance of the subject of Psychology. However, Psychology is not a simple subject having grown over the last 100 years into a nuanced and diversified subject responding to and addressing several problems. In this, Experimental Psychology has gained in importance ever since psychologists began studying how people decide on various matters. Some universities lean towards behavioural dimensions while others focus on the cognitive, social or developmental dimensions.

The University of Oxford runs an MSc by Research Experimental Psychology, which covers topics in “behavioural neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, social psychology and psychological disorders, and developmental science” (https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/msc-research-experimental-psychology?wssl=1). University College London, UK has MPhil / PhD in Experimental Psychology, which focuses on “understanding the psychological and biological bases of behaviour, to improve the health and wellbeing of both individuals and society”. (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/research-degrees/experimental-psychology-mphil-phd)

Some universities have attempted to bring together neuroscience and data or quantitative analysis. The University of Carolina (UNC) at Greensboro offers an MA in General Experimental Psychology, which is a terminal Master’s degree program and focuses on “developmental, cognitive and social psychology, as well as psychopathology and developmental psychopathology”. The University also directs ‘theses in quantitative psychology and biological psychology”. (https://psy.uncg.edu/graduate/experimental-psychology/). Seton Hall University’s MS in Experimental Psychology offers this course with and without thesis based studies in which “Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Behavioral Sciences” are with thesis and “Data Visualization and Analysis and Psychological Science” without thesis. (http://www.shu.edu/academics/ms-experimental-psychology.cfm). Similarly, Murray State University has a Master of Science (M.S.) in Experimental Psychology “with an emphasis in behavioral neuroscience”. (https://www.angelo.edu/content/profiles/7153-experimental-psychology-masters-degree-ms/Templates/profiles-graduate-programs.php) Nova Southeastern University (NSU) offers an MS in Experimental Psychology, which teaches “biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology” and “experimental design and analysis.” (https://psychology.nova.edu/graduate/experimental-psychology/curriculum.html). Indiana State University, College of Arts and Science (CAS) offers an MA and MS in Experimental Psychology, which focuses on cognition, social psychology, and biopsychology. (https://www.indstate.edu/cas/psychology/programs/masters-experimental-psychology/experimental-psychology-masters-program).

Some have a research orientation. University of Exeter runs an MSc in Psychological Research Methods which “emphasis on cognitive and clinical neuroscience research.” (http://www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/psychology/psychological/#Overview) Brooklyn College offers an MA in Experimental Psychology, which “offers students an education in the foundations of psychological knowledge, the current state of the field, and training in research design and data analysis”. (http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/web/academics/schools/naturalsciences/graduate/psychology/experimental.php). University of Sussex offers an MSc in Experimental Psychology. The course gives an education in “biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology”, “philosophical and ethical foundations of psychology” and “research methods” into this. (https://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/masters/courses/psychology/experimental-psychology-msc) Saint Louis University runs an MS Experimental Psychology, which “prepares students for academic teaching and research careers in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, developmental or social psychology.” (https://www.slu.edu/programs/graduate/psychology-experimental-ms-phd.php) University of Tennessee offers an MA Program in Experimental Psychology, which incorporates the following areas of research: Biological Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial & Applied Psychology and Social and Personality Psychology”. (https://psychology.utk.edu/grad/ma.php).

Radford University offers an MA in Experimental Psychology, which focuses on the “breadth of knowledge the psychology’. (https://www.radford.edu/content/chbs/home/psychology/programs/experimental/curriculum.html) Western Washington University runs mentorship model based Graduate Program in Experimental Psychology in which “each incoming student is paired with a faculty member with similar scholarly interests who will advise and mentor the student on his/her academic progress and scholarly activities” (https://chss.wwu.edu/psychology/experimental-psychology-graduate-program)

At The University of Alabama in Huntsville MA in Experimental Psychology, “The focus is general-experimental with coursework in applied experimental, biological, cognitive, developmental, human factors, industrial/organizational, and social psychology.” (https://www.uah.edu/ahs/departments/psychology/programs/graduate)The Psychology department at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin has an MA in Psychology with concentration in Experimental Psychology, focusing on “advanced psychological theory (i.e., developmental, cognitive, personality, social), research methods, statistics, and manuscript preparation.” (https://www.utpb.edu/cas/academic-departments/psychology-department/graduate-program#Applied)

Taking a slightly different focus, James Madison University runs an MA in Psychological Sciences, which focuses on “basic science such as cognitive psychology, sensation and perception, learning theory, and behavioral neuroscience. It also provides a foundation for work in applied settings such as in the federal government.” (http://www.psyc.jmu.edu/psycsciences/experimentalpsychology.html)

Health psychology is one of the rapidly growing fields and studies health related behavior, with a focus not only on the treatment of disease but also on its prevention. There have been so many accounts of people struggling to cope up with health issues during the pandemic that there is no need to argue the relevance of a subject like Health Psychology. Although there are differences in the courses offered, we do see an emphasis on behavioural dimensions and equipping people to better respond to health challenges, with some leaning towards a focus based on neuropsychology.

There is a growing need for School Psychology as it deals with students’ education and helps to sharpen their social, behavioral, emotional factors. Professionals in this field work with all stakeholders such as students, teachers, families, school and college administrators. It does seem as if this is more popular in North America, especially the USA, as many universities there offer Masters and PhD in this subject, while a few in Europe too offer.

Adelphi University offers an MA in School Psychology, which aims to provide “an ecological framework that promotes an appreciation of diversity and an understanding of the many factors affecting the academic and social-emotional development of children and adolescents.” (https://derner.adelphi.edu/psychology/graduate/masters-school-psychology/). Iona College runs an MA in School Psychology where “emphasis is placed on empirically based decision making in assessment, counseling and consultation service delivery and specific topics including functional behavior assessment, curriculum-based assessment, Response-to-Intervention (RTI), Positive Behavioral Supports, diversity awareness, and legal and professional issues. (https://www.iona.edu/academics/school-of-arts-science/departments/psychology/graduate-programs/ma-in-school-psychology.aspx).

The University at Austin offers MA / Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) and Ph.D. degrees which helps students “in understanding and enhancing the development of children and adolescents in context.” (https://education.utexas.edu/departments/educational-psychology/graduate-programs/school-psychology). University of Washington has an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program in School Psychology with a duration of three years – two years of coursework and one year of internship. This program “teaches students how to serve children and adolescents’ educational and social- emotional needs as school psychologists”. (https://education.uw.edu/programs/graduate/educational-psychology/school-psychology-edscert) The university also runs Ph.D. in School Psychology which prepares “scientist-practitioners whose practice of psychology is grounded in scientific knowledge and focused on enhancing the socio-emotional and educational competence of school age children.” (https://education.uw.edu/programs/graduate/educational-psychology/school-psychology-phd).

University of Cincinnati offers Specialist-Level Ed.S. and Ph.D. program in School Psychology and commits to prepare “competent professional school psychologists according to the scientist-practitioner model.” ((https://cech.uc.edu/human-services/graduate-programs/scpsy.html) (https://cech.uc.edu/human-services/graduate-programs/school-psychology-phd.html).

Several sports today have, in several ways, become commercialised. Televising games to bring popular sport into living rooms has helped increase fan following, sponsorship and prize money. The pressure on players to consistently be on top of their game has become monumental but many cannot handle this pressure, or lose their motivation after a bad day.

Sports psychologists are trained to help sportspersons adapt to situations either personal or within their team, to handle adversity and emotion. They help with issues of motivation, mental and physical strength. A degree in this field also entails an understanding of kinesiology – the mechanics of human movement. A practitioner in this field works holistically, with both mind and body. It is not uncommon to find a sports psychologist travelling along with a team, or with an individual in a non-team sport.

The arena of sport is not the only place where the skills of a sports psychologist are needed. They can be applied to any profession where the body is the actual tool (dance, gymnastics) for instance. This is a growing and evolving field of study with good employment opportunities.

The Department of Health and Kinesiology, Purdue University, has a Sport and Exercise Program. Students can undertake a two year full time M.S. degree or pursue doctoral studies depending on their existing qualification. This degree includes atheletic training education, motor control and development and sport and exercise psychology.

Liverpool John Moores University (School of Sport and Exercise Science) offers a one year M.Sc. in Sports Psychology. The programme is made up of core modules along with electives and research. These address issues such as anxiety and stress, mental skills training, ethics of practice and professional practice in sports psychology, among others. It is important that you check the guidelines for eligibility to this course as the criteria may be different for international students. (www.ljmu.ac.uk)

Another U.K. based university offering an M.Sc. in Sport and Exercise Psychology is Northumbria University, Newcastle.

It is well understood that happy employees are more likely to give their best rather than disgruntled or stressed ones, leading to greater productivity and efficient functioning. This is where the skills of an industrial – organizational psychologist come into play. Scientifically studying and understanding individual and group behaviour in the workplace enables the psychologist in employee training and human resource development among other things. In countries across the globe, (under varying nomenclatures) this rapidly evolving and much-in-demand field is recognised with set norms for accreditation. Governments and businesses, both big and small, turn to practitioners for help in training their own Human Resource departments, as well for working alongside employees from workers to senior management. This is a well-paid field with many career applications.

NYU runs an M.A. program in I-O. This is a two year program which can be completed sooner if done full-time. It caters to working professionals, giving students some flexibility. Students with the requisite grade may submit an M.A. thesis rather than sit for the comprehensive written exam. Trained graduates learn to “factor human behaviour into the successful business equation by motivating productivity, building resilient leadership, supporting diverse cultures, and managing organiztional change.”

The University of Western Australia offers a Master of Industrial and Organizational Psychology as a two year full-time program comprising of classroom teaching, research, and practical application. A graduate of this program qualifies for professional registration in Australia. (www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/…/master-of-industrial-and-organisational- psychology-coursework)

The M.Sc. course offered by Leeds University Business School is a one year full-time or two year part-time program, and recognised by the British Psychological Society. Fieldwork, seminars and tutorials make up a part of the curriculum, and students also have the opportunity of trying out their skills in an actual business set-up. (www.business.leeds.ac.uk/masters/msc-organizational-psychology)

“Industrial/Organisational and Business Psychology deals with human capital issues and is instrumental in helping businesses become more effective and profitable, as well as improving employees’ well-being and performance.” (www.ucl.ac.uk) University College London has a one year-full time and a two year part-time course in I-O. Graduates of this course are eligible to work as consultants. Management consultancy and positions as HR professionals are popular career options for students holding this degree.

Human Factors/ Engineering Psychology, overlaps with ergonomics and design as well as with several fields within the discipline of psychology. We don’t realise it but almost every aspect of our technology-driven lives is the result of extensive research and experimentation by engineering psychologists. “Engineering psychology operates at the intersection of experimental psychology and human factors by engaging in research that can be best described as ‘practically relevant’. As a science, the field of engineering psychology focuses on understanding the capabilities and limitations of human performance from the perspective of perception, cognition, and movement control.” (http://www.psychology.gatech.edu/graduate/engineering)

There is a rapidly developing relationship between man and machine, with accuracy, speed, safety and usability becoming the cornerstone of all technology. For this reason, industries have realised the importance of engaging engineering psychologists to assist in making designs functional and user-friendly. The scope for employment is vast – from medical facilities to academia, there are numerous environments in which an engineering psychologist may find work.

Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, has a full-time M.Sc. program in Human Factors. This is one year program, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, includes core modules, electives, and a research project. The objective is “to consider the human in systems from a physical, cognitive and organisational perspective.” (http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/492/)

The School of Engineering at Tufts University also offers an M.Sc. in Human Factors. Students are expected to complete the program within two years, failing which, they may apply for continuation. Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships are also available on a competitive basis. (http://engineering.tufts.edu/me/graduate/msHumanFactors.htm)

Another option for students interested in this branch of psychology is the M.Sc. in Engineering Psychology offered by Georgia Tech School of Psychology (College of Sciences). This degree is accredited by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. It is a two year program which can lead to a Ph.D. for those interested in continuing with their research. The college also has an arrangement for internships both within the school as well as externally. (http://www.psychology.gatech.edu/graduate/engineering)

(Note: You may find that some General Psychology programs include Engineering Psychology as part of the course.)

The Oxford dictionary defines the word ‘forensic’ as “Relating to or denoting the application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of crime.” As the name suggests, Forensic Psychology is a marriage of psychology with criminology or vice versa, and sometimes comes under the heading of Criminal Psychology. It is also linked with criminal justice and at times, with the rehabilitation of criminals. “A master’s degree in forensic psychology can open the door to a variety of professional opportunities that apply the art and science of psychology to the understanding and functioning of legal and related fields, including such areas as evaluating criminal minds and detecting criminal actions.” (www.thechicagoschool.edu).

Understanding the workings of the human mind helps not only in profiling criminals for police investigations, but also in evaluating mental fitness. Working with the police, a forensic psychologist may be required at a crime scene to use his/her understanding of deviant behaviour to help track a criminal. Any available knowledge of the criminal’s past enables the psychologist to work out future behaviour as well. Forensic psychologists can help the courts in child custody cases by determining whether a person is a risk to themselves or to others, or they can work as family counselors or as consultants.

A background in either criminal justice, forensics, criminology, or psychology with a focus on deviance, would be an added advantage to those wishing to pursue an M.A. or an MSc. in this field. The following information is merely an outline of what is on offer. There are many more courses of this type so further research is a must.

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers an M.A. in Forensic Psychology. “Students learn from experienced faculty through a practitioner-focused curriculum and obtain the skills needed to effectively use psychology in legal and public policy arenas in an ethical, academically informed, and research-based manner.” (www.thechicagoschool.edu).

An M.A. in Forensic Psychology is also offered by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. Students have the option of following the regular route for earning this degree, or they may complete it via the Externship Track or through the Externship/Thesis Combination. It is advisable that you study the 3 options carefully before applying. The overall focus of this program is to provide students “with an advanced understanding of psychological development and psychopathology, personality assessment, psychotherapeutic techniques and research methods.” (www.jjay.cuny.edu).

The School of Psychology, University of Kent (U.K.) conducts an MSc. in Forensic Psychology which enables students to qualify as Chartered Forensic Psychologists, and has been certified as meeting the criteria for preparation for doing PhD research. (www.kent.ac.uk)

Middlesex University also offers an MSc. in Forensic Psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society, using interactive methods as a means of instruction, with a strong focus on research. “With a strong grounding in ethics, human rights, professional practice and research, our training will aid subsequent professional practice.” (www.mdx.ac.uk)

This is an area of psychology that concentrates on people whose issues may not necessarily be linked to problems of mental health. Daily life throws up situations that sometimes benefit from objective guidance. It is “the applied branch of psychology that facilitates lifelong personal and interpersonal functioning, focusing on emotional, social, vocational, educational, developmental issues and concerns related to health.”

Counselling families, helping people figure out their careers or working with those who have issues with self-worth are among the many concerns a counsellor might deal with. Counsellors also work closely with people who have diagnosed emotional disorders and physical drawbacks, among others. Counselling holds an important place in the well-being of society at large, as it aims to improve the quality of life of those in need of support. This field of study is linked with areas of psychology across the spectrum.

Students may choose to be general counselors or work with a specific and focused demographic groups. For instance, some Master’s programs are dedicated to child welfare and counselling children; there are others which train counsellors in working solely with special needs and disabled patients. The employment options for counsellors are many. They can work in mental health, educational or business institutions, in the social welfare sector, or as private practitioners, to name a few.

The Department of Education and Counselling Psychology at McGill University, Canada, runs an M.A. in Counselling Psychology that trains students to become professional counsellors. Apart from preparing students to become professional counsellors, “this program teaches them to be intelligent consumers of the relevant research literature in this field and to do research in the applied aspects of the profession. For this purpose, it draws on the findings of developmental psychology, career psychology, and neuropsychology among other basic sciences.” (http://www.mcgill.ca/edu-ecp/) There are two types of Master’s programs –

Concentration: Professional/Internship. This degree qualifies students to work as professional counsellors.

Concentration: Project. Students opting for this program are trained for doctoral research and will not qualify as practitioners. It is advised that you check the qualification requirements of the country in which you are planning to practice.

Keele University (U.K.), has a full time M.Sc. course in Counselling Psychology. This is a one year program, and integrates classroom teaching with research and practical application. The aim of the program is to “equip students with the knowledge and expertise to support their work as professional person-centred/humanistic counsellors.” (http://www.keele.ac.uk/pgtcourses/counsellingpsychology/#tabs-1)

NYU Steinhardt offers an M.A. in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness. This is a recognised and accredited degree for qualification as a licensed counselor. The program looks to guide students in “understanding people across the lifespan in cultural contexts, promotion of equity and social justice…”

Another option for students is the M.Sc. in Counselling Studies at The University of Edinburgh. This is offered as both a full time as well as a part time course. The program provides a firm background in counselling skills, acting as a stepping stone towards further specialist training for those wishing to become qualified and practicing counsellors.

“Behavioral neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system mediates behavioral effects in the realm of motivation, perception, learning and memory, and attention and motor performance. Research in this area investigates the complex interplay between the brain, behavior and environment, utilizing multiple levels of experimental analysis, in areas that include communication, biological rhythms, and learning and memory, and audition.” (http://www.psychology.ucsd.edu/research-areas/cognitive-behavior-neuroscience.html)
Behavioral neuroscientists examine the biological link to behaviour in all animal forms. This field of research builds upon the various aspects of psychology such as cognitive and developmental psychology, among others. Cognitive neuroscience is “the study of cognitive processes and their implementation in the brain. Cognitive neuroscientists use methods drawn from brain damage, neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, functional neuroimaging, and computer modeling.” (http://www.psychology.ucsd.edu/research-areas/cognitive-behavior-neuroscience.html)
Postgraduate degrees in this field are generally at the Ph.D. level, with programs ranging from anywhere between 4 to 6 years of study towards the final thesis. Coursework and seminars are also important components of these programs. Career options are many: Education, Mental Health, Robotics, Behavior Therapy, Clinical or Medical Research, are just a few of the areas in which you might choose to work.
The Graduate Center – City University of New York, has a 5 year Doctoral Program in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience. Students are exposed to interdisciplinary training in the areas of Biology and Psychology under the guidance of CUNY faculty, and are also expected to take Research Rotations.
Rutgers University in New Jersey, also offers a doctorate in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience, with interdisciplinary courses in the earlier part of the program. Students are expected to complete their Masters thesis within a given time frame, following which, those who qualify move on towards their research dissertation. The whole program should be completed within 4-5 years. The university offers Teaching Assistant posts as well as opportunities to teach summer school classes – a good way to supplement funding or to gain teaching experience. (www.psych.rutgers.edu/bn)
The Department of Psychology, University of York, (U.K.) runs an M.Sc. program in Cognitive Neuroscience. Students interested in this course must note that it falls under the Laboratory-based Taught Masters courses, and is not Classroom-based. “The overarching aim of the M.Sc. in Cognitive Neuroscience at York is to provide a bridge between undergraduate study and Ph.D. research in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology and imaging methods.” (www.york.ac.uk>taught>cns) There are two options within this program: the M.Sc. pathway (Empirical Project), or the Diploma Pathway (Literature Review).

Clinical psychology in a generalized sense has been around for a long time. The importance of its applications and value in daily life situations has led to much research and advancement over the years. Although students may learn to identify the manifestations of mental illness, delving into their causes, diagnosis and treatment, there is also great emphasis on personal issues. It is now understood that people do require help and support when coping with tragedy or a sudden change in circumstance. Today, it is not only schools and hospitals that employ clinical psychologists, but also community centres, clinics and corporate houses. Researchers in this field are also much in demand.
When looking for postgraduate programs in clinical psychology, you will find that some colleges term it a Master’s in Applied Psychology. You will also notice that there are overlaps with child development and similar fields, but at the end of the day, all these courses prepare you for either licenced or non-licenced clinical practice. A non-licenced program will permit you to work in certain types of jobs, but not as a private practitioner. Hands-on clinical training is a major component of all good clinical psychology degree courses. Most programs will prepare you for doctoral work leading to certification.
Teachers College, Columbia University, has a Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology. The M.A. in Psychology in Education is actually targeted at students “interested in the field of Clinical Psychology and the mental health professions.” The course is actually designed to help students “clarify their interests” and to explore “the multiple avenues available in the ever-growing mental health field beyond.” This program covers a wide spectrum of subjects in the field of psychology, but students pursuing this degree will not be eligible for the independent practice of professional psychology. (www.tc.columbia.edu)
An M.Sc. in Developmental Psychology and Clinical Practice from University College London, is another option. Although the title of the course suggests a degree in developmental studies, it is aimed at preparing students for clinical practice, hence its inclusion here. This is a two year degree program, and is based at the Anna Freud Centre in London, which is well recognised for its research in the field of child mental health. Children are the main focus of this course, with a view to preparing students to work in clinical settings with children and families. (www.ucl.ac.uk)
Murdoch University, Perth, School of Psychology and Exercise Science offers a Master of Applied Psychology in Clinical Psychology. As with most degree courses in clinical psychology, research and hands-on experience are linked with coursework. After the first year, students are given the option of transferring to the Psychology PhD course. For students who do not wish to do a PhD, this Master’s program is recognised by the Australian government. (www.murdoch.edu.au)
