Innovations in Drug Discovery and Development helps improve human and animal health by creating new and effective drugs and medicines. Hence, it is not surprising that many universities offers this course but what is interesting to see is the range of specializations and focus varying across universities.

Some universities emphasize on the design of drugs such as Georgetown University, which offers Master of Science in Drug Design and Discovery, imparts learning for the “processes involved in the use of technology and bioinformatics to design drugs”. (https://biotechnology.georgetown.edu/academics/drugdesign/) The University of Aberdeen has a Masters by Research (MRes) in Drug Discovery, which aims to develop student’s research skills and provides the information of drug discovery process from “both a scientific and commercial (bio-business) view.” (https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-taught/degree-programmes/54/drug-discovery/).

Whereas some universities combine pharmaceutical science in learning such as Coventry University has an MSc in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery, which conglomerates “pharmacological, molecular, biochemical, cell biological and genetic techniques” altogether to deliver the learning. (https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/pg/2020-21/hls/pharmacology-and-drug-discovery-msc/) Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam’s MSc in Drug Discovery and Safety teaches “the interaction between molecules and human body from a range of perspectives” such as “chemical, medical, toxicological, pharmacological and genetic”.

The British Society for Geomorphology defines it thus: “Geomorphology is the study of landforms, their processes, form and sediments at the surface of the Earth (and sometimes on other planets). Study includes looking at landscapes to work out how the earth surface processes, such as air, water and ice, can mould the landscape. Landforms are produced by erosion or deposition, as rock and sediment is worn away by these earth-surface processes and transported and deposited to different localities. The different climatic environments produce different suites of landforms. The landforms of deserts, such as sand dunes and ergs, are a world apart from the glacial and periglacial features found in polar and sub-polar regions. Geomorphologists map the distribution of these landforms so as to understand better their occurrence” (https://www.geomorphology.org.uk/what-geomorphology-0).

At the Master of Science in Earth Sciences offered by Australian National University, “You’ll study courses from different earth science disciplines including computational geosciences, data sciences, analytical techniques, biogeochemistry, experimental petrology, geobiology, geochemistry, geochronology, geology, geophysics, ocean and climate change and planetary sciences” (https://science.anu.edu.au/study/masters/master-science-earth-sciences?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrIbTjpXL7wIVEx4rCh15aAaVEAMYASAAEgISc_D_BwE). It is distinguished from Geology but different authors and institutions lay different emphases. Some treat Geomorphology as a sub-discipline within geology but there is no consensus.

Coventry University offers a Geomorphology Master in Science by Research (https://www.educaedu.co.uk/institutions/coventry-university-uni1866). The University of Bristol offers a PhD in Geographical Sciences (Physical Geography) as also an MSc by Research. It offers also a Masters by Research in Global Environmental Challenges and a PhD in Geographical Sciences (Human Geography) – (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/2021/sci/phd-geographical-sciences/).

The University of Freiburg offers a Masters in Geography which “enables students to understand and assess how environmental issues are shaped by biophysical, social, economic, and political processes. All students take a core module dealing with conceptual and theoretical foundations of geography, and choose a specialisation: either dynamics in glaciology and geomorphology, which covers topics such as the cryosphere, glaciology or alpine geomorphology; or nature, society and politics, which explores nature-society relations in space through thematic entry points such as nature conservation and resource management, rural development and change, water governance, land and environmental conflicts” (https://www.unifr.ch/geo/en/studies/geography/master.html)

The Department of Geography, University of Sussex offers highly specialized PhD programme in Geomorphology. It says that “The science that links environmental change to physical responses in geomorphological processes and landforms is a complex area and one that is of interest to policy makers and academic research. Our research investigates sensitive systems by field monitoring, physical and numerical modelling, description and analysis of sediments, soils and rocks, and reconstruction of Quaternary environments. We address the cross-cutting research theme Surface-Atmosphere Interactions together with the Climate Science and Society research cluster” (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/geography/research/earthsystems).

The Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona, focuses on research and education in the nature, genesis, and history of the Earth and its crust, and the evolution of the environment and biota at the Earth’s surface. It offers a Geosciences MS. It says on its website that “The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona offers both a two-year M.S. and a four-year Ph.D. program. Both programs are research based and have course work requirements, as well as a final requirement of an M.S. thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation. All students who apply are considered for financial support (in the form of teaching/research assistantships, or fellowships). Almost all students admitted to our degree programs are offered financial support; M.S. students are funded for two years, and Ph.D. students are funded for four years” (https://grad.arizona.edu/catalog/programinfo/GEOSMS).

The M.S. in Applied Gepgraphy – Applied Geomorphology at The University of North Texas “prepares geography students for careers or further education in a wide variety of areas concerned with processes that shape the surface of the earth. Applied geomorphology emphasizes geomorphological processes that are of societal significance, including hazards such as flooding, expansive soils, landslides and coastal erosion. This track enables students to structure their degree plans around conceptual and technical aspects of applied geomorphology” (https://www.topuniversities.com/universities/university-north-texas/postgrad/ms-applied-geography-applied-geomorphology).

At The Geography & Environment Studies of The University of Regina, “MA and MSc degree programs and in special circumstances a PhD program are offered in selected areas of Geography. Research interests of the department include: cultural, historical, economic, rural and urban geography, cartography, resource management, remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS), hydrology, geomorphology, and applied climatology. Particular emphasis is paid to geographical analysis of the problems of the Canadian prairies” (https://www.uregina.ca/gradstudies/future-students/programs/geography.html).

The Simon Frase University offers Graduate Student Opportunities in Fluvial Geomorphology and Sedimentology.

Cartography is an extremely interesting discipline. Britannica.com defines it as “the art and science of graphically representing a geographical area, usually on a flat surface such as a map or chart. It may involve the superimposition of political, cultural, or other nongeographical divisions onto the representation of a geographical area” (https://www.britannica.com/science/cartography). A seemingly simple definition, the subject actually offers many possibilities.

Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary offers a MSc in Cartography whose aim is “The goal of this program is to train Cartographers with a professional cartographic approach based on high level theoretical and practical knowledge.

This program is recommended to applicants who want to able to manage and coordinate cartographic and geoinformatics research projects as well as to have the knowledge and skills to solve traditional cartographic or information technology-based problems.

This program provides students with a broad scale of knowledge in Cartography and Geoinformatics in combination with geography, other earth sciences, information technology, database management, web-based mapping services, etc. Students acquire the theory as well as the methodologies in the development and implementation of the latest visualization technics”.

This Masters in Geoinformation Technology & Cartography focuses on understanding and managing the locational data required to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) together with visualisation and map production in a GIS environment. It is the only programme in the UK to have a significant emphasis on cartography; and our focus on the underpinning geomatics aspects and cartographic output is unique among GIS programmes.

The Technical University of Dresden also offers

The University of Wisconsin

There is the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Cartography. Describing the course, the EM says: “Maps and cartographic communication processes are keys for enabling humans to deal with all kind of spatial data in an efficient way. The domain of cartography can be seen as by definition very broad and interdisciplinary. The Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Cartography (CARTO) is a joint program of: • Technical University of Munich (TUM, Germany), Chair of Cartography• Vienna University of Technology (TUW, Austria), Research Group Cartography• TU Dresden (TUD, Germany), Institute for Cartography• University of Twente (UT, The Netherlands), Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)The four partner sites represent centres of excellence in the field of cartography, recognized at the European and global levels” (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/projects/eplus-project-details/#project/586676-EPP-1-2017-1-DE-EPPKA1-JMD-MOB)

There is also an MSc Surveying and Cartography offered by many. One of them is University College London, according to which “The Geospatial Sciences (GIS and Computing) MSc teaches students the theory, tools and techniques for working with geospatial data, from acquisition to processing to analysis. Students have the opportunity to engage and work with academics and industrial partners on cutting-edge research through seminars and a dissertation.

The University of British Columbia, which offers a Masters and PhD in Digital Arts and Humanities, defines the subject thus: “Using digital technologies to explore questions central to the arts and humanities; applying arts and humanities frameworks to digital tools and technologies”. Elaborating it says “Digital Humanities, broadly speaking, refers to “the nexus of fields within which scholars use computing technologies to investigate the kinds of questions that are traditional to the humanities…or ask traditional humanities-oriented questions about computing technologies” (Fitzpatrick). Similarly, Digital Arts is a highly integrated practice combining strong theoretical frameworks with specific acts of making in graphic design, digital photography, digital video and audio editing, web design, 2D and 3D animation, digital writing, and mobile application development. Combining the two fields in one degree facilitates dialogue between creative and humanistic studies — a conversation that is central to the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies”. (https://gradstudies.ok.ubc.ca/igs/digital-arts-humanities/).

MA in Digital Arts & Humanities at UCC, Ireland, combines theory and practice. As the site describes, “The course will give you a grounding in how information and communications technology (ICT) tools can be used to capture humanities data sources in digital form to frame research questions, collaborate on research using social networking tools, and present results, both in print and online. You will be encouraged to and facilitated in the creation of digital artefacts individually and in teams” (https://www.ucc.ie/admin/registrar/calendar/postgraduate/Masters/arts/page102.html). Naturally, you can do a PhD.

The University of British Columbia’s College of Graduate Studies also offers an MA in Digital Arts & Humanities and a PhD “Using digital technologies to explore questions central to the arts and humanities; applying arts and humanities frameworks to digital tools and technologies”, (https://gradstudies.ok.ubc.ca/igs/digital-arts-humanities/).

The MTU Crawford Department of Arts in Health & Education has some interesting offerings (https://crawford.cit.ie/). It offers an MA in Art and Process. Explaining the choice of ‘Process’, it says: ”The concept of process is understood in a variety of ways: as material exploration and the engagement with medium and technique; as theoretical investigation and systems of enquiry without resolved or object-based endpoints; as innovative models of art distribution, including the possibilities of working outside traditional sites of art production and reception”, (https://crawford.cit.ie/courses/art-and-process/). And there is a MA in Art Therapy, which “leads to a professional qualification to practise Art Therapy in the form of therapeutic intervention with a wide variety of client groups. On completion graduates can register with the professional body for the Creative Therapies in Ireland, IACAT (Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists)”, (https://crawford.cit.ie/courses/art-therapy/). Trinity College in Dublin offers an MPhil in Digital Humanities and Culture. As it explains, “Many of the biggest questions in our world today can only be answered by drawing on knowledge of both culture and technology. Trinity’s MPhil in Digital Humanities and Culture prepares its students to take on these questions in a wide variety of contexts, whether they want to deepen their understanding of a humanities subject through data mining and visualisation; explore the virtual transmission of culture and heritage by and beyond museums, libraries and archives; or join the movement to make technology development more human”, (https://www.tcd.ie/courses/postgraduate/az/course.php?id=DPTLL-DHCU-2F09).

You may also look at The Open University in the UK for a variety of courses (http://www.openuniversity.edu/). Similarly, examine the offerings from the European Association of Digital Humanities (https://eadh.org/news/category/courses).

King’s College, London, offers a Digital Humanities MA which “brings digital theory and practice to the study of human culture: from history, English and music to museums, digital publishing and more.

Digital technology provides many new opportunities and challenges to those working with textual, visual or multimedia content. Using critical theory, case studies and hands-on project-based exercises, our course studies the history and current state of digital knowledge production, exploring theoretical and practical challenges in modelling, curating, analysing and interpreting digital representations of human culture in all its forms, past and present.

Leads to careers in cultural heritage, publishing and web- based businesses” (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/taught-courses/digital-humanities-ma)Lancaster University also offers a similar Digital Humanities MA (https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/postgraduate-courses/digital-humanities-ma/).

The University of Alberta offers an MA in Digital Humanities (https://www.ualberta.ca/media-technology-studies/programs/digital-humanities/index.html).

The Australian National University offers a Digital Humanities Masters according to which “Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary field of study located at the intersection of humanities scholarship and computational technologies. Its key purpose is to investigate how digital methodologies can be used to enhance and transform research in the Arts and Social Sciences. It also employs traditional humanistic skills to analyse modern digital artefacts and to scrutinise contemporary digital culture” (https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/2021/major/dihu-maj).

Social Data Science is a newly emerging area, which combines social science and computer science and develops data driven solutions for social issues. Dr. Taha Yasseri, Course Instructor, Oxford Internet Institute and Alan Turing Institute has described it thus: “It’s not data science applied to social data, it’s a data science that is social” (https://campus.sagepub.com/blog/what-is-social-data-science). Some Universities term it Data Analytics in Social Sciences, while others incorporate public policy dimension too.

Based on a search through the internet, it appears that this course is available more in UK universities with the course duration being one year; some universities are using particular programming languages and some are giving their focus on the society in particular. The US has some specifically focused on public policy. You may have to search more depending on your orientation.

The London School of Economics and Political Science has an MSc in Applied Social Data Science, which imparts “training in fundamental aspects of applied data science, computation and programming and quantitative methods” and also focuses on “variety of programming languages and applications, particularly R and Python” “to create and manipulate large databases” and to “think creatively about how to deploy these skills in the context of specific projects” (https://www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/Graduate/Degree-programmes-2020/MSc-Applied-Social-Data-Science). The University of Essex runs an MSc in Social Data Science, which develops skills in “advanced data science and artificial intelligence” and emphasises “on big data, new forms of data, and computational methods to work with such data – all within a strong framework of social science applications and research design principles.” (https://www.essex.ac.uk/courses/pg01314/1/msc-social-data-science) University of Exeter offers an MSc in Applied Social Data Science, which equips students “with the technical understanding of a range of social data science techniques and the practical software and programming skills to implement these methods”. (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/degrees/stem-cells-regenerative-medicine-mres/#profile). The University of Southampton also offers MRes in Stem Cells, Development and Regenerative Medicine. The MRes is organised by the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells & Regeneration (CHDSCR) (http://stemcells.org.uk/) which undertakes fundamental research into early development and stem cells, together with applied translational research targeting the NHS and patient benefit. (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/medicine/postgraduate/research_degrees/degrees/mres-in-stem-cells-development-and-regenerative-medicine.page)

Some universities call their programme Master’s in Regenerative Medicine. The NUI Galway has an MSc in Regenerative Medicine and “focuses on stem cells, gene therapy and tissue engineering, focussing on how they can be applied to develop new therapeutics”. “This course is administered by the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI), a world-class biomedical research institute. REMEDI’s main focus is to use cells and genes to regenerate healthy tissues that can be used to repair or replace other tissues and organs with a minimally invasive approach.” (http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/taught-postgraduate-courses/regenerative-medicine.html). The Queen Mary University of London also offers MSc in Regenerative Medicine which provides “advanced, multi-disciplinary training in the scientific principles and clinical applications of regenerative medicine, and is delivered jointly by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Engineering and Materials Science”. (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/coursefinder/courses/164872.html). The MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) based at the University of Edinburgh offers Ph.D. in Regenerative Medicine focusing on “stem cells, disease and tissue repair to advance human health” and the goal of this program is “developing new treatments for major diseases including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, degenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, and liver failure.” (https://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/degrees/index.php?r=site/view&edition=2018&id=695)

Auston University, Singapore offers combination of theoretical and practical based M.Sc. in Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine (http://www.aston.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/taught-programmes/life-health-sciences/msc-stem-cells-and-regenerative-medicine/). Ankara University, Turkey, offers a theoretical and research based Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Master Program. (http://bbs.ankara.edu.tr/Amac_Hedef.aspx?bno=3347&bot=1002).

Some universities offers very specific subject oriented courses in Regenerative Medicine like the University of Bradford which runs an MSc in Skin Sciences and Regenerative Medicine which focuses on mainly skin and says that “The skin is a particularly useful model as it contains very active stem cells and is a relatively accessible source of human cells. The unique human regenerative capacity of the hair follicle is particularly interesting. Follicles shed their hairs during frequent growth cycles regenerating new replacements; these may resemble previous ones or differ in size and/or colour (e.g. beard hairs replacing tiny facial hairs).” (https://www.bradford.ac.uk/courses/pg/skin-sciences-regenerative-medicine/).

The University College London offers MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine which “equips students with critical understanding of how nanotechnology can be harnessed for the improved detection and treatment of disease, the use of stem cells in medicine, tissue engineering strategies for tissue regeneration, improving biomaterials for directing cell behaviour, the regulatory, ethical and commercial hurdles for the translation of these emerging technologies.” (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/taught-degrees/nanotechnology-regenerative-medicine-msc)

In a similar fashion, The University of Manchester has an MRes program in Tissue Engineering for Regenerative Medicine which focuses on “strategies to repair, replace and regenerate various tissues and organs to solve major clinical problems, gaining insights into topical issues including stem cells, polymer technology, biomaterial fabrication/characterisation and gene delivery.” (https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/masters/courses/list/06439/mres-tissue-engineering-for-regenerative-medicine/course-details/#course-profile). The Swansea University has an MSc by Research in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicines. (http://www.swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/engineering/msc-by-research-tissue-engineering-and-regenerative-medicine/#key-features=is-expanded&description=is-expanded&entry-requirements=is-expanded&how-to-apply=is-expanded&tuition-fees=is-expanded&additional-costs=is-expanded), the FH Technikum Wein, University of Applied Sciences offers Master’s Degree Program in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicines and is offered as a double degree program in cooperation with the Experimental and Medical Biosciences master’s degree program at Linköping University (LiU) in Sweden (https://www.technikum-wien.at/en/study_programs/master_s/tissue_engineering_and_regenerative_medicine/)
