Furniture Design

Studies in ‘Furniture Design’ has given a significant platform to the furniture concept and its industry. This course is helpful to those students who wish to create a new design in it with modern look but without changing its old philosophical view.

The University of Nottingham Trent University, offers 1 year full time / 2 years part time MA course in Products and Furniture design. The Kingstone University, London, also offers a studio and project based Masters programme in Product and Furniture design which “recognises and prepares students for the diversity of design and practice.” (http://www.kingston.ac.uk/postgraduate-course/product-furniture-design-ma/). The University has also says more about the, “Designers need to be able to think creatively and strategically about the identity of products and their cultural backgrounds and to support their ideas with innovation, commercial thinking and ethical questioning.”

The Virginia Commonwealth University MFA in Fine Arts with Concentrations in five disciplines like Ceramics, Fiber, glassworking, jewellery / metal working and one among these is woodworking / Furniture Design. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) offers MA and MFA in furniture design. “Collaborations with peers in related creative spheres lead to groundbreaking projects like SCADpad, where SCAD furniture design students innovated micro – housing furniture solutions that were both functional and breathtaking”. The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) offers two years full time MFA in course in Furniture design and also a three years MFA to few qualified students, “where they attend RISD as a graduate student in a preparatory year utilizing a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in preparation for the two – year MFA curriculum and thesis work”.
