Operations Research

One of the grand old subjects, Operations Research blends several disciplines into a single subject focusing on quantitative techniques to solve problems. Mathematical modelling is core to any programme, but the emphasis varies. Some emphasise the engineering dimension offering the programme under an Engineering department. Some offer it as an MSc in Management Science. Some link it to Econometrics with OR as a specialisation. Some universities in Europe tend to be inclined towards Economics.

Whatever be the emphasis, OR as a subject will involve quantitative techniques associated with optimization, probability, stochastic processes, and statistics to the design and operation of systems. Some universities insist on a thesis and some require students to develop an engineering design, which indicates an academic and practical orientation.

The RMIT University in Melbourne offers a Master of Statistics and Operations Research (http://www.rmit.edu.au/study-with-us/levels-of-study/postgraduate-study/masters-by-coursework/mc004/#pageId=overview).

MIT offers a Master’s in OR under its Operations Research Center (http://web.mit.edu/orc/www/academics/sm.html). Princeton University offers a Master of Science in Engineering under its Operations Research & Financial Engineering programme with the focus of enabling students towards a PhD (http://orfe.princeton.edu/academics/masters). Georgia Tech, School of Industrial & Systems Engineering, offers an MS in Operations Research (https://www.isye.gatech.edu/academics/masters/operations-research). The Viterbi School of Engineering in the University of Southern California offers an MS in Operations Research Engineering (https://gapp.usc.edu/graduate-programs/masters/industrial-systems-engineering/operations-research-engineering). Master of Engineering (M.Eng) Program in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, Cornell Engineering, offers a Master of Engineering in Applied Operations Research (http://www.orie.cornell.edu/academics/master/).

The University of Southampton offers an MSc in OR under its Mathematical Sciences (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/maths/postgraduate/taught_courses/msc_diploma_in_operational_research.page).

The London School of Economics and Political Science offers an MSc in Management Science (Operations Research) (http://www.lse.ac.uk/study/graduate/taughtProgrammes2016/MScManagementScience.aspx). The University of Manchester offers an MSc in Business Analytics: Operations Research and Risk Analysis under its Alliance Manchester Business Scholl (http://www.mbs.ac.uk/masters/courses/analytics-operational-research-risk-analysis/).

The School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University offers an MSc in Econometrics and Operations Research with a specialisation in Operations Research (http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Faculties/SBE/TargetGroup/Education/MastersProgrammes/OperationsResearch.htm). The University of Groningen offers a Master in Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Studies (http://www.rug.nl/masters/econometrics-operations-research-and-actuarial-studies/).
